FAQs
Q: How long will it take me to learn how to play ?
A: It all depends how much time you have to practice - the more
time you have the quicker you learn. This also depends if you practice
what you can play, or try and conquer new exercises that you're not
familiar with. There's no point other than enjoyment in only playing
what you know. In order to get better, you need to do new exercises
and more challenging songs. Those of us who can already play an instrument
often learn quicker too. So if your friend learns quicker, but can
already play piano, recorder or what-ever, don't be disheartened -
they already have a musical background.
Some of us also seem to have more natural talent than others - I,
for one, had as much natural ability as a brick ! This shouldn't deter
you (it's often a hidden strength) when you learn correctly and don't
lean too much on talent as a short cut, you normally avoid learning
bad habits which need changing later.
Q: Do I still need a teacher ?
A: YES - Even though Play Guitar is an excellent reference
for music, and also offers tuition and guidance, technology does not
yet offer a visual monitoring option than can help your techniques,
and aid you physically when your fingers aren't quite correctly positioned
. It also can't hear your technique and tone when you're playing and
offer constructive comments on how you can improve on your playing.
This package together with a teacher (even if you only go once a month
) will be best.
Q: What PC do I need ?
A: Any PC with 16Meg ram is ideal. This package is not a game
that requires quick response. The program was also tested on an old
486dx66, and actually ran, although not well as it was painfully slow,
but it still makes it possible to work with the program - those that
have petrol driven PCs - tough luck! It's also been run on Windows
95, 98, Millineum and XP - all with great results. Any pair of speakers
are fine, and the sound card can be 16 bit or bigger, all with the
same quality sound as the recordings are MP3, not MIDI.
Q: Does Play Guitar explain soloing ?
A: Yes, the program explains about target notes, chord tones,
how to deal with "out-of-tune-notes", as well as providing
you with all the western scales as well as some exotic scales too.
It also provides you with great soloing exercises and back-up tracks
to practice them with.
Q: How do barre chords work ?
A: In Play Guitar there is a comprehensive section on barre
chords as well as a in-depth section on transposing which is quite
relavent to this topic.
Q: What is a mode ?
A: Good question - in Play Guitar this topic is explained
in depth too, as well as an entire section in ScaleFinder which will
calculate and work out where to play any scale on the fretboard in
any key you choose, as well as give you a list of chords that will
work with the same key.
Q: How many chords are there ?
A: That's a tough question, I've asked several teachers, and it's
because there are several ways to play many chords and so many altered
chords too that it's quite difficult to calculate. But in Play
Guitar there are 1260 chords in the main directory. The beginner
section has over 30, then there's the power chords, barre chords,
inversions, and a few rare shapes for some of the songs ! Once you
can play each from memory then maybe we'll expand, although with version
2 of Play Guitar we'll be showing extra ways to play the chords,
as well as add a few new shapes.
Q: My friend play bass - will there be a bass program ?
A: YES - it's almost finished, it covers both 4 and 5 string bass
guitar. We'll also be writing one on drums and then even keyboards.
